Background

In order to write this brief essay, you must first read Genesis 1-3. Next, you must read Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s comments about these chapters in The Woman’s Bible. Finally, you must read the one paragraph excerpt from Mary Wollstonecraft. The first 3 books of Genesis purport to describe how God created the world; how humans were created and permitted to live in an earthly paradise; how the first man and woman disobeyed God; and how God changed the rules after the woman and man disobeyed him. “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat,” God says. In her Woman’s Bible, Elizabeth Cady Stanton argues that the entire story of Adam and Eve is suspect and that, by at least one interpretation of these 3 chapters, man and woman were always meant to be equal. Mary Wollstonecraft does not refer to the book of Genesis at all. But she argues, in her own way, for equality.

Instructions

This is an individual assignment. Write a brief essay, not longer than 500 words. Explain the phrase, “In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat.” To whom is it addressed? What do you imagine Stanton feels about this curse? And Wollstonecraft? Is it possible that Wollstonecraft is actually asking, on behalf of women, for the right to share the load?
