Research at least two theatre companies and identify two productions you’d like to see.
Reference and link to two online reviews of the actual production that you view.
List the possibilities and include:
Name of Theatre Company
Title of performance
Author(s)
Location of Performance
Dates and Times
Website
Then write a 100-word minimum reflection of each of the two shows you are considering, at what theatre, and detail the reasons why, based on the criteria from the Theatre-goers Toolkit.
Attend the selected production. Once in your seat, read your program. You might want to include some of the director’s notes or background information from the cast and crew bios in your response/review…and now enjoy this live theatre experience! It is the culminating event for this class.
Production Analysis (Critical/Experiential) Be sure to utilize as many of the aspects you have explored in this class when responding to the production.

Write a 250 word response to the production based on a combination of the Critical Criteria and the Experiential Criteria below. Although, due to the closure of theaters during the pandemic, your focus and responses will primarily need to be based on the Critical Criteria.

Critical Criteria are based on the method of analysis you’ve been learning in this class:

Plot (the story, what happens, the dramatic action, the journey)
Character (who the is play about, how the characters are performed by the actors)
Theme (what the play is about, conflict, political, social or psychological ideas)
Language (the dialogue, how the playwright uses words)
Music (literally the use of live or recorded music, singing or sound but also the sounds of the language)
Spectacle (the visual elements of design, scenery, lighting, costume, make-up, movement)

Experiential Criteria are based on the actual performance experience from your perspective:

Going to the theatre space
Pre-show experience in the space (audience, program, sights and sounds)
The world of the play (how was the playing space defined? design elements, staging)
Performance effect produced by the work of the actors
Responses by the audience
Overall experience of the production (immediately following the show and afterwards)
