Prompt: Opportunity is a major theme in the development of colonial America. Why do you think that “opportunity” has been so important in the history of America?

I believe opportunity has been a big role in the creating of our history because, without it, we may or may not have the things we have today, or be able to work, go to school or even start a family. In the video, it states that the English had all these weapons and tools that the Native Americans and the Native Americans had fur clothing and food that the English did not have, so they both had the opportunity to trade items amongst each other to share something new to both sides, which would eventually grow over the decades. With opportunity, also comes consequence and war. This resulted in having both the Natives and the English fight over the land, resulting in a lot of death and enslavement. Opportunity is so important because it gives everyone a chance at something new without any judgment. It can also lead to other opportunities that can further you in life and make you go on to much bigger things. War is never good, but this helped expand our countries and helped us find new crops and food to be planted and shared among us, it founded our ancestors who helped us become us.

One opportunity leads to more opportunities. America is well known for its melting pot because a lot of immigrants from all over the world came here for opportunities to have a better life. A lot of countries have silenced the voices of the people; but in America, your voice is heard. This makes people want to live here.

According to the crash course video, the history of Native Americans and English people is very bloody and cruel. Native Americans saw an opportunity to own guns and other technologies they haven’t seen before; while the English saw an opportunity to trade because they were not very good with hunting and obtain food by agriculture in the beginning.

According to Eric Foner, The Puritans came to Massachusetts seeking religious freedom. This shows that America was well known for its opportunities for freedom/voice/liberty. Eric Foner said “In the middle was a vast array of the population that had, you might say, “partial” freedom. These were indentured servants. Most English who came overcame as indentured servants, people who traded away their freedom for a few years in exchange for passage to the New World.” This also shows that America is based on opportunities for a better future. A lot of people come here for their future and the future of their kids. No matter how hard it is in the beginning, it is always worth it in the end because if you work hard, you will have a better future.
