Name: Adriana Gonzales
Date: Friday, August 23rd, 2019
Time: 8:30-11:30 pm
Place: State Street, Soho Lounge
Research Methods: Ethnographic Observation, informal interviews
Introduction: Briefly describe the setting in detail (Describe the place, environment,
length of observation, research goals, and any of your own hypotheses/expectations.
The introduction helps to set the stage for the narrative and includes factual who, what,
where, when details.
E.g., I went to Soho, a dancing club and bar, located on Santa Barbara’s main State
Street from 8:30pm to 11:30 pm. I invited three female classmates and one male
housemate to go with me to Soho because there was a salsa band playing. As I am
researching the local social construction of Latin immigrant identity with an emphasis on
on expressive culture, this event and field site offers an opportune vantage point from
which to begin descriptive documentation. There were about 20 couples dancing all
night long, and before the band went on, two dance instructors gave a salsa class.
Throughout the night, I mostly recorded descriptive notes, but I also had casual
conversations with a bartender and a couple of dancers about the music and their time
dancing.
Main Descriptive Narrative: Write in detail the observed activity (e.g., Tonight, Soho
has/had [present or past tense okay] a conjunto group mainly playing salsa, merengue,
and cumbia from 9:30 pm to 11pm, and customers paid $15 at the entrance. A wellknown local salsa band, “El Picante,” was playing so the place was at its maximum
capacity of 180).
This is your narrative describing the events and the space observed; your text should be
organized, written with complete sentences, and be free of grammatical errors. Be sure
to distinguish your analytic notes (your own thoughts/reflections/interpretations) from
your descriptions; formatting the analytic notes in different colored text or with italics
are two easy methods of doing this if you include them as annotations throughout the
body of the narrative. Another technique is to devote a separate section with your
written analysis, but you will want to label this with a section heading at the top.
