COMPANY ONE: SYNOPSYS, INC.
BACKGROUND
Synopsys stands for SYNthesis and OPtimization SYStems. Founded in 1986 by Aart de Geus,
an Electrical Engineering student at the Southern Methodist University of Dallas. Synopsys is
best known for its development of the first Design Compiler, an automated logic synthesis tool
that transformed the schematic chip design to a language-based design. The company mainly
focuses on software developments tools to counter cybercriminal attacks. To that end, they have
established a strong relationship with “government organizations, financial institutions,
healthcare providers, and insurance companies” for implementation of “Software Security
Initiative (SSI) [programs]” (Synopsys, 2017). Synopsys is the world’s fifteenth largest software
development company, exceeding an annual revenue of approximately $5 Billion (Securities and
Exchange Commission, 2012).
SWOT ANALYSIS
One of the main core strengths of Synopsys is its “strong research and development (R&D)
capabilities” (DATAMONITOR: Synopsys 2011, pp.5). The company’s R&D expenses in 2010
reached $449.2 million, and “grew at a CAGR of 7% during the period FY2008-10 (pp.5). As a
result, Synopsys launched new advanced products to the market and upgraded its major ones for
“[newer] solution for performance analysis,” in a shorter period, thereby increasing its revenues
(pp.5). The company also has a “diversified portfolio of more than 1,200 patents issued,” with
expiration dates through 2030 (pp.5). However, the company’s main competitors such as Magma
Design Automation and Mentor Graphics had “approximately 500 US and 30 non-US patents as
of January 2011” (pp.5).
On the other hand, Synopsys faces one significant weakness that makes the company
substantially “vulnerable to the specific market conditions, increasing the business risk, and
[hindering] its opportunities for growth in other markets” (DATAMONITOR: Synopsys 2011,
pp.6). The company’s revenue is strongly dependent on the U.S. market. In FY2010,
approximately 48.4% of the company’s total revenue was generated from inside the U.S.
Although Synopsys is a global leader in the electronics market, only 51.6% of its total revenues
are generated from “Japan, Europe, Asia Pacific and other geographies,” (pp.6). Nearly half of
the company’s total revenue “relies heavily on the US markets,” preventing the company from
generating higher percentage of its revenues from the overseas (pp.6).
By contrast, Synopsys is expanding its opportunities for growth for its “well positioned growing
EDA tools market,” and major strategic acquisitions and alliances (DATAMONITOR: Synopsys
2011, pp.8). The company is acquiring various engineering and technology resources from
Synfora, “a provider of C/C++ high-level synthesis tools used to design complex SoCs and

FPGAs,” as well as Virage Logic, “an independent provider of semiconductor IP for the design
of complex ICs” (pp.7). In addition, the acquisition of the Optical Research Association (ORA),
“a privately held provider of optical design software and optical engineering services,” will allow
Synopsys to enter new markets “associated with displays and solid-state lighting using light
emitting diodes (LEDs),” as well as infiltrating into “markets such as semiconductor lithography
equipment and cameras” (pp.7). Such strategic acquisitions will expand on the company’s
market share and enhance its total revenue in the coming years.
A key threat to Synopsys is intense competition that “may reduce the company’s market share
and operating margins” (DATAMONITOR: Synopsys 2011, pp.8). The company’s major
competitors, Cadence Design Systems, Mentor Graphics and Magma Design Automation are
featuring similar products at lower prices, “post-contract customer support, interoperability with
the company’s and other vendors’ product,” and more durable product license terms, threatening
Synopsys’ competitive position (pp.9).

COMPANY TWO: GOOGLE
BACKGROUND
In 1995, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the co-founders of Google in Stanford University decided
to “built a search engine,” called Backrub “that used links to determine the importance of
individual pages on the World Wide Web” (Google, 2004). Backrub caught the attention of the
academic community and the Silicon Valley investors. Believing that this project will succeed,
they support Larry and Sergey with a $100,000 check. In August 1998, Google was officially
born with that investment. Larry and Sergey purpose were to “organize the world’s information
and make it universally accessible and useful,” to everyone (Google, 2004). Today, more than
93% of the worldwide search requests are managed by google. It employs approximately 88,000
employees. In 2017, Google’s annual revenue exceeded $110 billion, making it one of the
world’s most powerful and influential companies.
SWOT ANALYSIS
One of the most significant strengths of Google is its strong brand image. It is amongst the
highest ranked and dominant brands worldwide. It was ranked four consecutive times “as the
world’s most valuable global brands,” overtaking some of its most powerful competitors such as
“Microsoft, General-Electric, Coca-Cola, Wal-Mart and IBM” (DATAMONITOR: Google,
pp.5). Google also maintains an “strong market position (pp.5). It holds the most popular search
engine on the web and a “robust market share in social networking segment,” through Gmail,
Orkut, and YouTube (pp.5). Furthermore, Google has a prosperous infrastructure base including
hardware, software, and online resources. It also preserves a “strong portfolio of [owned]
websites,” generating 67% of its total revenues through advertising (pp.6). Google’s strong
infrastructure base and advertising revenues allows the company to “introduce innovative
products and services to gain competitive advantage” (pp.6).
However, Google has one main weakness. It’s “products lack integration with its other products”
(pp. 7). The company has been launching many new products that have very little in common
with each other. Product integration is important because it “allows internet companies to steer
visitors from one service to another,” retaining “for a longer time,” on their websites (pp.7). It
also empowers the internet companies “to gain acceptance for new products quickly” (pp.7).
Google faces many innovative opportunities to increase its customer base through new services
and products. Google is updating its platforms for Gmail, Google-TV, “websites and tools for
sport fans around the world,” providing more user-friendly applications to “better serve its
customers” (pp.8). Furthermore, Google’s strategic acquisitions of its smaller competitors such
as Ad-Mob and On2 Technologies “will expand and strengthen the company’s portfolio,”
thereby increasing its revenue (pp. 8). Also, Google is building a “comprehensive platform for

mobile devices,” making universal changes to Android-powered smartphones at lower costs
(pp.8).
There are two main threats that Google is fighting against. Intense competition and hacking
related security issues. Microsoft’s Bing and Yahoo are competing “with vertical search-engines
and e-commerce sites,” such as Kayak, Monster.com, Amazon, and eBay (pp.9). Also, Twitter,
Yelp, and Facebook’s strategic advertising is significantly affecting Google’s “revenue growth
and market position” (pp.8). Furthermore, Google is subjected to lack of security and hacking
issues. Storing an enormous quantity of “users’ and customers’ proprietary information,” puts
their reputation at risk in case of breaches or unauthorized accesses.

SYNOPSYS, INC.
Synopsys innovative technology is changing the way we live and work. The ever-increasing use
of unsecured IoT devices is placing our privacy at critical risk. However, with strong R&D
capabilities and alliances, Synopsys is advancing its tools for IP integration, silicon chip design,
application security testing, and verification to deliver smarter and more secure products. With
over 10,000 employees and annual revenue of $5 billion, the company’s demand for professional
business and IT individuals is immensely increasing. Synopsys greatly values diversity and
embraces its employees from vigorous learners to world-class innovators who care about the
community around them, wanting to make their mark in the information technology era. For that
reason, Synopsys provides excellent opportunities for career advancement, salary raises,
bonuses, and other essential benefits to create a pleasurable experience for its representatives.
GOOGLE
Even though Google is amongst the highest rated companies worldwide with a revenue
exceeding well over $90 billion annually, Google’s intense care for its employees is of utmost
importance for one consideration to work for the company. Google provides support for its
employee’s loved ones, promotes a healthy lifestyle, and offer extensive opportunities for
personal and professional development. On the other hand, Google’s drive for continuous
innovation and passion in their products and services to improve efficiency for their customers
implies a very successful and stable future for the company. Also, Google’s strong advertising
and marketing strategies have given a cutting-edge advantage over its competitors, increasing its
revenues and market share tremendously. I believe that working for Google is a dream come
true.
MY FINAL DECISION
After a comprehensive research on both companies, I strongly hold that working for both
corporations greatly suits my career goals and desires. Synopsys and Google place innovation at
the heart of their business. Synopsys new synthesis technology for more effective product
security and Google’s ingenious ways of organizing and storing data indicates their prominent
brand image and prosperity. Their unique corporate culture is to keep employees happy and
productive by providing them with outstanding benefits that every employee hopes. Working for
either Synopsys, Inc. or Google would be a privilege for me for I know I am respected, valued,
and heard.

research paper (SWOT analysis), will give you an excellent amount of information about the companies you wish to work for which in return will help you in
an interview. You will go into the interview knowledgable and confident about the company.
