INTRODUCTION TO MEDIA STUDIES
SUMMER 2020
FORMAL ESSAY 2
DUE: MONDAY, JULY 13TH BY MIDNIGHT VIA MYCOURSES
This second essay (select Option 1 or 2) should be approximately 4-5 pages typed in 12-point double-spaced Times
New Roman. Include page numbers and appropriate MLA/APA citations. This essay is worth 150 points. Grading
will follow the basic rubric below.
50 percent: Does the writer address the topic they set out to and follow the basic guidelines of the assignment?
40 percent: Does the writer establish and support a clear position or argument (thesis statement)? Does the essay
go beyond description to provide critical analysis with examples? Is there an introduction, main body, and
conclusion?
10 percent: Is the writing clear, concise, and organized? Does the author use proper grammar and syntax?
OPTION 1
For this essay, read a handful of articles related to the pros/cons of binge watching television. I have linked many
articles below, but there are many more articles on a topic that has received much media attention and scholarship
in recent years. In your essay, briefly introduce your topic by discussing some of the articles you read by
connecting the writers’ arguments/analysis to your own experiences in watching television, especially binge
watching. Some questions you might address (you do not need to address all of these):
?
?
?
?
How many approximate shows have you binge watched? What are some examples?
How does the experience psychologically effect you (engrossing, isolating, relaxing)?
How does binge watching fundamentally change the television viewing experience (gained or lost)?
Are there shows you wish you could have binge watched, but didn’t? Why? What makes for good bingeworthy television?
? How might binge watching connect to any of the theoretical frameworks or components discussed earlier in
the semester?
? Lastly, do you think the creative endeavor of television production (or the experience of watching
television) is fundamentally changing due to binging, based on your own experiences?
You can, but do not have to come down on one side or the other in terms of whether binge watching is positive or
negative overall (it is likely more gray, than black or white). The more important part of this assignment is to
engage with your own viewing habits by reflecting on how binge watching has impacted your own experiences.
Lastly, you are required to draw some conclusions from your own experiences on how the phenomena of binge
watching could impact television as a medium moving forward. Be sure to step outside of yourself to consider the
big picture of television as a creative, cultural industry.

OPTION 2
Throughout the last decade, new media startups have launched built around innovative technology to
extend our use of media in profound, yet often simple ways (Facebook in 2004, YouTube in 2005, Twitter in 2006,
Instagram in 2010, Snapchat in 2011, etc.). This essay necessitates two smaller writing frames. First, peruse The
New Yorker’s archive of articles in its longstanding series, “Annals of Technology”
(http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/annals-of-technology.) In looking through the more recent articles, I want
you to pick one of the following articles written since March 2018:
You should begin your essay with at least a couple of pages synthesizing the article and providing discussion and
analysis on the media and technology issues involved in the article you selected. Most importantly, the article you
choose will serve as a springboard for introducing your own media-based technological innovation or refinement
centered on the issues discussed in the reading. For example, you might read “Reddit and the struggle to detoxify
the Internet” and discuss how an online space could function to minimize trolls and other toxic content, in a way
that is different than current online discussion forums. Connect your initial discussion and analysis of the article
with your own innovation and then elaborate and expand your argument. Keep in mind that you should make a
media-based argument in your essay, since this class is a media studies course and not a business class. Therefore,
write to your audience, which is me, someone in media studies and not someone with an MBA. As a result, you do
not need to worry excessively about costs, venture funding, etc. at this point. While this essay should allow you to
use your imagination and creativity, it can also be challenging because you still need to develop your innovation in
relation to legitimate areas of concern connected to digital media and technology.
