of view.

Required Readings

  • Halpern & Tramontin: Chapters 8 & 9 (PFA, Early Interventions)
  • Resource: PFA Field Guide
  • Resource: DHHS – Disaster Behavioral Health guidance
  • Resource: SAMHSA – DTAC
  • Resource: CDC – Disaster mental health

REFERENCE: This is a critical resource for disaster mental health response — The National Center for PTSD’s Psychological First Aid (PFA) Field Operations Guide, developed jointly with the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN). You can download the Field Guide as a PDF from this website. There is also a mobile app for field use. We will review the core actions.

This is the national model of PFA adopted by, for example, the Medical Reserve Corps. It is also the primary model for government run field response in the state of PA.

The Red Cross model is similar, though not identical, and is intended more for Shelter Operations.

I have attached the Psychoeducation Handouts that are an Appendix to the Field Guide. These handouts can be used

individuals during response to educate them about normal reactions to abnormal events.

Review the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) website on Disaster Behavioral Health

I would like you to start to familiarize yourself with SAMHSA (The federal

agency responsible for mental health)’s Disaster Technical Assistance Center. Please begin to explore its mission, resources,

” DTAC helps prepare states, territories, tribes, and local entities to deliver an effective mental health and substance misuse response to disasters.”

Review the website and resources found on the CDC’s website “Coping With a Disaster or Traumatic Event- Mental Health Resources for Traumas and Disasters
