DQ1- The city where I live is called Covina, California, which is 7.046 square miles and with a population of 47,963. The number of crimes in total for 2019 was 1,124 with a crime rate of measured between 27.88 and 27.90. The crime rate is measures per 1,000 residents within the geographical area. The racial makeup of Covina is 62.10% white, 5.03% Black African American, 0.90% Native American, 9.82% Asian, 021% Pacific Islander, 17.18% from other races and 47.78 of a Hispanic Decent. This city is made up prominently of Hispanic individuals in which may be the reason why there are so many gangs.

The city of Covina Police Department has been struggling with gangs, graffiti, and drugs sales within certain parts of the city. The chief John Curley who I know personally has enacted many programs to fight crimes in the city. The department has hired new police officers who rotate a schedule of 3/12 hour shifts. Many officers are assigned to ghetto areas and drug infested hot spots. They have a crime prevention team that is comprise of investigators and gang intervention programs in conjunction with frequent patrol units. The department also has weekly meetings relating to recent crimes in the surrounding areas. Citizens patrol officers who are volunteers and neighborhood watch have also pitch in their time to help with crime prevention and crime control program. Explanation of why crimes happened in certain areas of a city has much to do with its demographics. According to De Nadai, Yanyan, Letouze, Gonzales and Lepri (2020) “Explained how population may structured crime and crime trends within certain geographical areas. Considering inclusive factors such as socio-economic characteristics may provide understanding of outstanding factors that influence crime across cultures” (para. 1-2).

DQ2- One of the current interventions we have within our community here in Seattle, WA is homelessness. Homelessness has gotten worse over the last few years and is currently increasing with addiction, crime, and of course, homeless. In the article, Seattle Under Siege, it stated:

Seattle is under siege. Over the past five years, the Emerald City has seen an explosion of homelessness, crime, and addiction. In its 2017 point-in-time count of the homeless, King County social-services agency All Home found 11,643 people sleeping in tents, cars, and emergency shelters. Property crime has risen to a rate two and a half times higher than Los Angeles’s and four times higher than New York City’s. Cleanup crews pick up tens of thousands of dirty needles from city streets and parks every year.

At the same time, according to the Puget Sound Business Journal, the Seattle metro area spends more than $1 billion fighting homelessness every year. That’s nearly $100,000 for every homeless man, woman, and child in King County, yet the crisis seems only to have deepened, with more addiction, more crime, and more tent encampments in residential neighborhoods. By any measure, the city’s efforts are not working.”(Rufo, 2019).

With the increase in rent, new homes, and luxury apartments and condos being built people have no choice but to either move or be evicted from their homes in the city. There have been many attempts to help the community but with the increase in violence, crime, homeless, and addiction issues, there needs to be a new way to clean up this problem and the mess associated with it.

DQ3- Within my jurisdiction there are a wide range of ethnicities and it has continued to exponentially rise within the last 5 years. There are predominantly 47.78% Hispanic and a small fraction of other ethnicities. However, drugs have been prevalent in such areas for quite a while. Drugs like heroin and crystal meth subsequently have damage many individuals with low self esteem and a sense of addiction. The Covina Police Department has been working together with homeless shelters and other drug addicted individuals. Many blame many factors that drive the drug trade. Cartels have been known to deliver tons of drugs over the borders and other ingenious ways (Goldberg 2019). The United States have declared an emergency with the war on drugs. The drugs slowly but surely end up in ghettos, slums and in any city where buyers are available. Drug treatments and prevention programs must be implemented immediately, or the problem will keep getting worst.
