Discussion: Introduction Statement

The agency I am writing about is the The William T. Grant Foundation, formerly known as the Grant Foundation.

One of the first steps for completing your Prospectus is defining a good introduction statement. The introduction statement is essential in determining if you have a viable topic to go forward with your PAS. It needs to be thoughtful and not rushed. Take time to understand the requirements and explore resources for the components of a good introduction statement. You can find resources in the Weekly Resources, but you are encouraged to locate your own, too. You should be reviewing peer-reviewed articles to determine if your topic meets the requirements of a viable topic. You will be enrolled in DDPA 8400 for at least four quarters. Therefore, you will be working on the topic for a lengthy amount of time. Ensure it is one that not only meets the requirements but will keep you engaged throughout the process.

To Prepare

  • Review the PAS guidelines and rubrics in the Weekly Resources.
  • Review the Doctoral Capstone Preproposal Start Kit. As a reminder, although this kit discusses capstones, the same principles will apply to your PAS. It is suggested you bookmark this page and refer to it often throughout your PAS journey
  • Post 2–3 ideas of what you would include in the introduction statement of your PAS about your agency or organization(The agency I am writing about is the The William T. Grant Foundation, formerly known as the Grant Foundation

Assignment: Statement of Purpose

It is important to get started as soon as possible. Your Prospectus is the first step in getting approval to begin your PAS. The biggest mistake and holdup for students is not following the rubric and guidelines. It is critical to review these often and again before turning in any component of your Prospectus, Proposal, and PAS. Some of the things to keep in mind that are explained in more detail in the guidelines is that the PAS must be meaningful, justified, grounded, original, impactful, feasible, aligned, and objective. Think about if the scope is too large that it would take years to collect data? Is the topic too broad? Do data already exist to use, or will it even be possible to collect the data? Will your study create positive social change? Remember your goal is to get to graduation. You will have plenty of time after graduation to continue to expand on your research in different ways.

To Prepare

  • Review the requirements of the introduction statement in the PAS guidelines and rubric

Craft an initial introduction, statement of purpose, and rationale for your PAS. Be sure to consider the requirements of these elements:

  1. Introduction to the study
  2. Statement of purpose
  3. Rationale for the study
