Prompt & Reflection
Educational barriers are liked to crossing borders because there are many challenges associated with enrolling in higher learning. Education is an expensive investment that requires someone to dig deep in their payroll or savings to pay for the knowledge imparted. However, not all people are privileged to get this opportunity to study and learn in a new environment that requires technical skills and devotion. The educational challenges that I have faced include segregation due to social class, racism, and discrimination. These barriers have detrimental effects on the overall learning before someone can adapt to the new system. For instance, discrimination and segregation are significant obstacles that almost every learner or tutor faces at one point in the educational system. Racism also follows closely, whereby learners are discriminated based on color and social class hence posing a big challenge and concern in the education system.
Segregation among learners has always been a big problem in a new environment of learning. The majority of schools have mixed learners who come from diverse demographics and a different color. In this case, learners who fail to adapt to higher learning environments by creating new friends have a problem tracking what is happening, especially when it comes to following lessons and other curriculum activities. Some of the learners also become withdrawn from within the school, and they are psychologically affected by having low self-esteem (Taylor & Brandon, 76). In the long run, if they are not counseled and advised, they end up suffering from depression that can lead to suicide or even engaging in drugs to forget sorrows and disappointments.
Discrimination is another barrier that I faced when I joined the tertiary institution and schooling level. Since I come from a middle social, economic level background, the neighboring children come from well off families, and even their speech and communication was far more than mine. They were proud, and the children could insult me due to our lifestyle and our dialect. The conversation that we made was categorized to be of an insignificant family and genealogy. The insults were continuous, and this made things to be soo terrible and unbearable. Most of the children from these affluent families indulged in crime, drugs, and others became urchins in the nearby cities. Moreover, other children did not benefit from schooling since they were imprisoned due to crimes and committing offenses charged in the court of law.
The significance of education cannot be overemphasized, and this case is because learning and acquiring knowledge from school has many merits. First, education makes a person understand and know their environment better. In return, this knowledge opens people’s minds to seize every opportunity that avails in their premises. And by so doing, the family grows in social class, and also it changes the overall lifestyle of eating healthy foods and seeking better health services when sick. Communication is another vital ingredient that is mastered in education. Through proper communication, the traders and professionals can have mutual agreements on deals (Duckworth & Angela, 24). Education helps someone also realize themselves by identifying their passion and their interest paramount for progress and development. Proper education equips learners with knowledge of how to interact with everyone and understand peoples’ cultures and behaviors that help them avoid trouble and misunderstanding.
Education of both girls and boys empowers them to be independent. This step makes it easy to have an informed society that can design programs to rehabilitate urchins and other people who need help. Planning and implementation are specific strategies that need education to positively impact the overall outcome of activity (Taylor & Brandon, 9). Subsequently, during a problem-solving session, educational skills are crucial since it requires some to make sound and well-thought decisions that will bring profitable solutions to a problem. Education has many benefits that can transform an individual and a society at large, and this can be achieved through proper coordination and collaboration for the overall good of the population. When a community is dedicated to building schools and then encouraging learning, it serves as a significant benefit to individual families and the whole population.
The education system can either eliminate barrier or demolish the detrimental impacts brought by the system. When tutors, learners, and other stakeholders join forces and work together, the educational barriers are addressed from the root cause, bringing about positive change. The initiation of education programs that helps tutors and learners to cope with the learning environment is usually the first step to prevent educational barriers in institutions (Duckworth & Angela, 11). Teaching learners to appreciate other races and learn from their culture without discrimination is another dimension to prevent the educational barrier. Finally, teaching learners and tutors to work together when dealing with different tasks helps them understand one another, and it builds team work that yields good results.
In conclusion, educational barriers such as racism, discrimination, and segregation due to social class are the challenges that deter education progress in schools and higher learning. The obstacles and the challenges can be prevented through proper coordination of the learners, administration, and other stakeholders that contain such barriers in the education system. Education programs are another strategy that can be implemented to eliminate discrimination, racism, and segregation in schools, and teach society how to appreciate different people without bias of color or social class.
