The choice of professional for this assignment was Alicia Schwaz from San Francisco.
The choice of Alicia is informed by her remarkable experience in the field of instructional
design, having worked for over six years. Alicia current works at SweetRush Inc. as the director
of Instructional Design Operations. In particular, the professional has a comprehensive history in
the e-learning industry. In my selection of suitable professionals, I laid my focus on the city of
San Francisco because of its high development in instructional design. Indeed, the city has the
highest-paid rates for instructional designers. I also found Alicia to be quite outgoing and
friendly, thus making her a perfect choice for this assignment. The professional also works in
pone of the leading companies dealing with instructional designs. Ultimately, I faced little doubts
as to her suitability for this assignment owing to her prowess in the industry.
The profession of instructional design is highly significant in improving the learning
process for students. Alicia identifies the accessibility of data as a leading ethical factor now and
in the future. Accordingly, the age of information technology has exposed online users to the
threats of data theft and fraud. In the course of her career, Alicia observes that privacy of data
should be maintained at all times. For instance, the amount of data accessible to instructors and
course designers should not be similar. Accordingly, the professional argues that the names of
specific students and their performance should not be disclosed to unauthorized third parties. The
assertions by Alicia are quite relevant in the contemporary world and especially with regards to
instructional design. In particular, Li & Steckelberg (2013) assert that student and user
information should be held by the designer in confidence. Information regarding students’
passwords and credit card information should be concealed for the benefit of the students.
Alicia seems to agree with the course content with regards to the most pressing legal
issues in the profession. According to her, the question of copyright and intellectual property is
already shaping out to be an essential aspect of instructional design. The use of copyrighted
material in blogs and YouTube videos is a burning issue affecting instructional designers. Alicia
observes that some of the companies coming up are built on content that has been stolen from the
internet and qualified as original work. The problem with such an approach is that the
instructional designer may face legal suits for the use of copyrighted material without authorized
consent. The observation made by Alicia concerning copyright and intellectual property is
relevant in modern society. Indeed, Loggie (2016) posits that violation of intellectual property
laws continues to affect the field of instructional design.
Alicia considers the influence of politics in shaping the curriculum to be the single most
important political factor currently. Accordingly, different states have different regulation
guiding curriculum development. This situation presents a host of challenges for institutional
designers because their content cannot be utilized in all cities. Consequently, Alicia argues that
having different regulation means that the institutional designer has to customize their projects to
reflect the rules of specific states. While this issue has always been there, the increasing role of
education in political campaigns is worrying (Danzberger, 2007). Politicians are bound to make
proposals on curriculum and education development based on the need to harvest more votes
from the electorate (Petrina, 2014). The arguments raised by Alicia are entirely accurate in the
US, where each state has a different school education board. The fact that each of these boards
come up with unique regulations poses numerous challenges to the institutional designers.
Based on Alicia’s responses, the instructional design industry is faced with several
challenges. In particular, the designers are affected by the privacy of information relating to
students and other users. Indeed Loggie (2016) agrees with this argument in stating that
institutional designers are continually exposed to data theft and fraud affecting their clients.
Similarly, the professionals suffer from the moral dilemma of having to consider the accessibility
of user information and data. Still, legal issues affecting the profession include the existence of
copyright and intellectual property laws. Infringement of these regulations may expose a
professional to legal suits arising out of use of the information without proper legal consent. This
argument is supported by Li & Steckelberg (2013), in their assertion that legal suits are rampant
in the instructional design profession. Finally, I find the lack of homogeneity in educational
regulations across the different states to be a significant challenge to institutional design.
While the profession of institutional design is faced by a myriad of factors, including
legal and political issues, I feel that ethical issues are more significant. Indeed, political and legal
issues can be addressed through ready institutions. In contrast, ethical problems are left to the
determination of the affected individuals, thus making them even more complicated. The issue of
accessibility of student and user information is perhaps most striking because of the violation of
rights to privacy. In the future, instructional designers should be aware of the need to observe
ethical conduct in their handling of user and student information.
