Think about starting a business. What would it look like? What are you going to do? Sell? Service? Provide? These
are some of the initial questions that you’ve got to answer when putting together a business plan. In order to
make this process systematic, there are a number of fundamental questions that you have to answer. There are a
lot of different ways that people put business plans together and around the edges there are some differences.
But, most approaches include some basic elements that will help to guide your thinking as you put your plan
together.
1.
Executive Summary – business purpose, highlights of the plan. This should be no more than a paragraph
and should look a lot like your “elevator pitch” – what you’d tell someone going from one floor to the next
if you’ve only got a minute to tell them what you’re going to do.
2. Industry analysis – what is the nature of the industry, relevant economic trends, legal or regulatory issues,
or risks that are likely to play a role in how you approach your business. This will require some research to
get a handle on what the industry you’re thinking about entering looks like. No more than a page.
3. Company description – missions, owners, legal form. This can be fairly descriptive and should provide
some sense of what you’re going to do and how you’re going to run the business. No more than half a
page.
4. Products and services – what are the major goods or services you’re going to be offering and what are the
unique aspects of your products/services relative to the competition. This can be as detailed as you’d like,
but unless there are some clear cut differences between what you’re doing and what the competition is
doing, this will be a hard sell. No more than a page.
5. Market description – size, competitor strengths and weaknesses, 5-year sales goals. Here, you’ve got to
describe who is going to buy your products/consume your services, the strengths and weaknesses of
competitors operating in the same market and what kinds of sales you expect over the next several years.
No more than a page.
6. Marketing Strategy – product characteristics, distribution, promotion, pricing – here, you break down the
nature of your products, how you’ll get them to the market, how you’ll promote your products/services
and what the price points are. No more than a page.
7. Operations description – manufacturing or service methods, suppliers, and controls. Here, you’ll describe
how you are going to actually produce what you plan to sell or develop the service and how you’ll
maintain quality standards (i.e., control). No more than a page.
8. Staffing – management and worker skills needed and available, compensation, human resource systems.
Here, you’ll describe who is actually going to be making/doing/selling/providing for your business, what
qualifications they’ll need (and what the availability of these skills are in the market), how much you’ll be
paying and how you’ll orchestrate the process. No more than a page.
9. Financial projects- cash flow projections 1-5 years, breakeven points. Here, you’ll describe what the
money looks like and how much you’ll need to sell to get your balance sheet to even. No more than half a
page.
10. Capital needs – amount needed, amount available, amount being requested. Here, you’ll break down
what kind of cash you need to get the business off the ground (and how long that will last), how much is
potentially available and from what sources, and how much you’re going to be asking different sources
for. No more than half a page.
11. Milestones – timetable for completing key strategies of the new venture. Here, you’ll describe the key
points in time when critical steps are going to be accomplished – when your app will be done, when you
get your first custom paint job completed, when the first customer comes into the shop, etc.. No more
than half a page.
In total, you will develop / turn in a 6-10 pages document. In order to receive credit, your business plan must be
typed, include your name, CWID, and section at the top of the page. To receive credit for the assignment, all 11
elements of a business plan must be included in the document. No late business plans will be accepted.
