The streets were dirty and poorly maintained, with garbage and sewage often left to accumulate in the streets.

One of the most vivid descriptions of life in the city at this time is provided by reformer Jacob Riis in his book How the Other Half Lives. Riis paints a bleak picture of the slums of New York City, where immigrants and the poor were forced to live in squalor and poverty.
