You will use some of this Riis material in your description of life in the east coast city of the late 1800s.

Finally you are going to tell which city problem today do you find to be the # 1 problem of modern city living.

Life in the east coast cities of the late 1800s was often harsh and difficult for city dwellers. According to Chapter 5 of the assigned reading, the modern city was characterized by overcrowding, poor sanitation, and a lack of proper infrastructure. Housing was often cramped and unsanitary, with multiple families sharing small apartments or living in crowded tenement buildings. The streets were dirty and poorly maintained, with garbage and sewage often left to accumulate in the streets.

One of the most vivid descriptions of life in the city at this time is provided by reformer Jacob Riis in his book How the Other Half Lives. Riis paints a bleak picture of the slums of New York City, where immigrants and the poor were forced to live in squalor and poverty. He describes overcrowded tenements with inadequate light and ventilation, and writes of the dangers of fire and disease that plagued these neighborhoods. Riis also details the struggles of children living in these conditions, who were often forced to work long hours in factories or on the streets in order to survive…….
